But much has deteriorated. The United Kingdom has begun to look more like a Third World country, shabby, littered, ugly, run down, without purpose or direction, misruled by a typical Third World government, corrupt, incompetent and undemocratic.

My generation has seen the decay of ordinary morality, standards of decency, sportsmanship, politeness, respect for the law, family values, politics and education and religion, the very character of the British.

Oh how Blimpish this must sound to modern ears, how out of date, how blind to “the need for change and the novelty of a new age”. But don’t worry about me. It’s the present generation with their permissive society, their anything-goes philosophy, and their generally laid-back, inyerface attitude I feel sorry for.

They regard themselves as a completely liberated society when in fact they are less free than any generation since the Middle Ages.

Indeed, there may never have been such an enslaved generation, in thrall to hang-ups, taboos, restrictions and oppressions unknown to their ancestors (to say nothing of being neck-deep in debt, thanks to a moneylender’s economy).

We were freer by far 50 years ago - yes, even with conscription, censorship, direction of labour, rationing, and shortages of everything that nowadays is regarded as essential to enjoyment.

We still had liberty beyond modern understanding because we had other freedoms, the really important ones, that are denied to the youth of today.

We could say what we liked; they can’t. We were not subject to the aggressive pressure of specialinterest minority groups; they are. We had no worries about race or sexual orientation; they have. We could, and did, differ from fashionable opinion with impunity, and would have laughed PC to scorn, had our society been weak and stupid enough to let it exist.

We had available to us an education system, public and private, that was the envy of the world. We had little reason to fear being mugged or raped (killed in war, maybe, but that was an acceptable hazard).

It is this background that has fundamentally informed his photography career. Zoriah has worked extensively in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon and has won wide critical recognition since the early &#39;90&#39;s. In 2006, in particular, he was named Photojournalist of The Year by Morepraxis; he won the VII Photo Agency Portfolio Contest; and he was included in World Picture News Networks Most Powerful Imagery of 2006.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;At this point, however, Zoriah is probably best known for having been expelled from Iraq earlier this year by the U.S. military. Working as an embed, Zoriah met the ire of the powers-that-be for publishing images of U.S. military dead on &lt;a href=&#39;http://www.zoriah.net/blog/&#39; target=&#39;_blank&#39; rel=&#39;nofollow&#39;&gt;his photoblog&lt;/a&gt;. Having witnessed a suicide attack on the unit he was attached to, Zoriah violated no codes or restrictions for documenting what he saw. (In fact, Zoriah was never charged with violating rules of the multinational force command and still retains his military credentials to work in Iraq.) Still, as part of a stringent and escalating military censorship effort, Zoriah was made an example of. (For background, I recommend photographer Michael Kamber&#39;s NYT &lt;a href=&#39;http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/26/world/middleeast/26censor.html?partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all&#39; target=&#39;_blank&#39; rel=&#39;nofollow&#39;&gt;article&lt;/a&gt; on the incident. Kamber, a universally respected photojournalist, has been a mainstay in Iraq for &lt;em&gt;The Times&lt;/em&gt;.)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Over the past few months, Zoriah has been photographing in Gaza. This particular image was taken this Fall on the Palestinian side of the Israeli wall, near Bethlehem. If the letters, split between the two barriers, creates an ominous sense, and the geography, plus the mixture of English and Arabic, evokes false campaign rumors about Obama&#39;s religion and ethnicity, the graffiti embodies its own style of hope. In a land torn in two, perhaps Obama offers connection, even a bridge.&lt;/p&gt;I welcome Zoriah to &lt;em&gt;BAGnewsNotes&lt;/em&gt; as much as I welcome the mood and tone of his social and political imagery. The &lt;em&gt;Newsweek&lt;/em&gt; &lt;a href=&#39;http://www.newsweek.com/id/169170/page/1&#39; target=&#39;_blank&#39; rel=&#39;nofollow&#39;&gt;cover story&lt;/a&gt; emphasizes how Obama, also mirroring Lincoln, desires to populate his administration with the strongest personalities he can find. Regardless how strong the character and ideological brew, the assumption is that Obama can temper it, mold it, and create a powerful balance out of it.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Whether the illustrators were conscious of it or not (and it&#39;s hard to imagine they weren&#39;t), what we have here is Obama as &lt;a href=&#39;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_yang&#39; target=&#39;_blank&#39; rel=&#39;nofollow&#39;&gt;yin and yang&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size: 8px;&quot;&gt;(illustration: Stephen Bliss /Bernstein and Andriulli for Newsweek.
