As difficult as it is to be a husband and parent, my wife and my daughter are the best thing that ever happened to me. Becoming a father will give you so much new insight.
Now that my daughter is 9 all the effort we’ve put into her education, and not allowing television into the home and not allowing her to play video games, it’s all paying off. She is intellectually curious, and I meet very few people in the world who are intellectually curious. The earliest years are the most important.
If you raise them to teenage years without a taste for television and pop culture and high fructose corn syrup, they will shun these things for the rest of their lives. they will find them boring and insipid. And they will find people who live for these things boring and insipid as well.
I found that it’s right never to tell a child what he or she must think (think back to church and Sunday school, if you were subjected to it). Never punish them for expressing a contrary opinion. Just smile with assurance and say, “That’s fine, you can think what you want.” The next day they’ll change their mind anyway.
I have found that my views and opinions have served me well. I make good choices in real life because of the spectrum of my views on life in general, though these views are simple. There’s a desire to always look for higher levels of complexity and novelty, but as it turns out, “cliches” and “truisms” are what’s functionally true after all, and I think if it functions well, then it’s right. So here’s my list of prejudices:
1. Human powered transport (bicycles, canoes, skates, walking, swimming) is better than motorized anything (just be careful of the motorized junk roaring around out there).
2. A complete person should have an opportunity to grow his own food, or someone in his household grows the food, or at least buy from someone who grows their own food.
3. Playing your own musical instrument, whether you have musical talent or not, is healthy for you because it provides biofeedback. It’s a very satisfying loop between kinetic movement, hearing the result of your kinetic movement, and then refining. Life doesn’t necessarily have a meaning beyond reproduction, and nowadays we live way past our reproducing years (though White grandchildren can be a second chance at forwarding evolution). So playing music can keep the howling wolves of existential meaningless at bay.
4. Yoga practice is very valuable. Many people have back problems, which yoga would absolutely prevent. A yogi is able to bend into a pretzel because he can tense up all the right little muscles, line everything up, and then bend into the pose. It’s not “stretching,” but rather “alignment,” and the catch is that you have to be strong enough to do that alignment. Also, if you do other athletics like martial arts, weightlifting etc., yoga will help prevent injuries.
5. Take the kid to gymnastics, ballet, music classes. You need to fill up the kid’s life with stuff other than tv and pop culture.
