April 30, 2007 Things are being hammered out.
Cari.net really screwed Alex and company. They were lucky to get a “raw dump” of their database directory, but it’s in no shape to be restored using the usual methods. However, I . . . have . . . a . . . . plan and we’re working that at the moment. Fingers crossed, hopefully vnnforum.com will go green within a few hours.

The reason you have to break a 500 MB file up is a limitation of some switches, routers, and older isps. If you use http for transmission, there is sometimes a magic error at the 256 MB point. The internet is not necessarily error free and any protocol for large file transfer must include a means for error checking and repair. Using par2’s is currently the best way to divide a file, be it video or a database, into parts or slices with repair info that can take as little as one percent of the file’s size. I consider 50 MB a little large for parts. A more common size is 10 or 15 MB.
I hope someone can restore the posts of the last three weeks. The radio show (illustrated with pictures in the thread) with the lawn chair joke was the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time. “When can I take it for a test drive?”
