IT’S A POSITIVE sign that Californians are no longer fixated on trying to get rid of illegal immigrants. In that respect, the state is way ahead of many other states where illegal immigrants (mostly from Mexico) are newcomers on the landscape.

California went through its anti- illegal immigrant catharsis in 1994, when voters approved Proposition 187, designed to strip illegal immigrants of a range of government services and force them to return to their home countries.

Since then, the state has mostly learned to cope with — and rely on — the record-breaking influx of immigrant workers that has incurred since the fervent Prop. 187 debate. A Field Poll released this month shows that 83 percent of Californians support giving legal residence to illegal immigrants. Most are opposed to more fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Even President Bush, in an interview with PBS’ Charlie Rose last week, placed “comprehensive immigration reform” at the top of his list of priorities for the remainder of his term. That presumably includes legalizing many, if not all, immigrants who are here illegally.
